When I was a kid, we had the best most amazing drive in stand, A&W, which used to operate the way 50s’-type diners did and which Sonic Burgers does now: a pretty girl would roller-skate to your car and take your order and in a few minutes she would bring your meal and rest it on your open window. You would stay in the comfort of your car and enjoy all the deliciousness and sip what was the most amazing, refreshing root beer ever.
Not to get too nostalgic, but these drive-in stands are now long gone at A&W. They have been replaced by more modern stand-alone restaurants, and in fact, A&W is now part of the large Yum Corporation, based in Louisville, which also owns a lot of other brands, including KFC and Long John Silver’s. On some occasions you might see an A&W and a KFC together, just like you could see a Taco Bell inside a Pizza Hut, etc.
But no matter. A&W still makes rockin’ root beer –the best, in my opinion, for over-the-counter or fast food bar none. But did you know that A&W turns 90 years old today? That’s a long time to be brewing this very old beverage. And to celebrate, all A&W’s around the country are offering FREE root beer floats at their restaurants from 2 until 8 pm today. The offer is good or a small float (probably 16 oz) and it’s one per customer. No cash. No other purchase required. (But here’s a tip: get one of their awesome corn dogs.) Simply say, “Give me my root beer float”, point to your mouth, then wait patiently. And when you receive the creamy swirls of ice cream floating on top of the root beer, served with along a long spoon and straw, and preferably enjoyed inside the restaurant in a frosty glass mug, you will experience heaven.
Get there fast, as the lines are known in some parts of this land to be long. To find your nearest A&W, click here.
Oh, and this Sunday, treat your lovable Dad to a 90-cent Papa Burger. What a deal! You don’t remember the Papa Burger? Mama Burger? Baby Burger? Come on!
